George Mathaus Obituary

George W. Mathaus, 82, of Palmyra, WI passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, WI.

George was born on February 22, 1939 in Milwaukee the son of Ralph and Harriet (Prue) Mathaus. He was raised in the Milwaukee area and graduated from West Division High School in 1957. While in high school, George excelled in football and earned a varsity letter all four years. After graduating high school, George faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was extremely proud of his military service and carried his patriotism and love for country with him throughout his life. After an honorable discharge from active duty, George continued to serve in the Army National Guard for many years. He was also very involved for in the local Palmyra American Legion Thomas Holcomb Post 304 and enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow veterans very much. He further demonstrated his service to others as a Boy Scout and Boy Scout Troop Leader. George was united in marriage to Kaye M. Eichorst and the couple enjoyed many years of marriage together and made many wonderful memories. George worked in the telephone industry in a few different positions, but the majority of his career was spent as an Installer. He will be remembered for his kindness to others. George had a pleasant disposition and was nice to pretty much everyone he came in contact with. He loved to chat and talk with his family and friends and was a very talented story teller. He had a knack for remembering the smallest details in the stories he told. He and Kaye were avid Badger and Packer fans and enjoyed watching games together very much. George was a good man and he will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Kaye Mathaus of Palmyra; his children, Lisa Mathaus of Milwaukee, William Mathaus of Milwaukee, John Mathaus of Milwaukee, and Patricia (Shawn) Heckman of Milton; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Madison, John, Zacharis, and Logan; his great-grandchildren, Brayden, Rion, Maddison, and Oaklyn; and his sister, Patricia Mantey.

George is preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in George’s honor may be made to the Palmyra American Legion Thomas Holcomb Post 304.

Funeral Service will be held at 7:00PM on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Palmyra, WI. The Rev. Steven M.D. Blyth will officiate the service. Visitation will take place from 5:00PM until the time of service at the church. George will be laid to rest with full military honors in Union Grove Veterans Memorial Cemetery during a private family burial service on Friday, March 11, 2022.
