Gregory G. Schmidt, 71, of Elkhorn, WI (and formerly Adams, WI) passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Delavan Health Services.
Greg was born on January 15, 1950 in Milwaukee the son of George and Marlene (Ulrich) Schmidt. He grew up in Sussex, WI and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. Greg served his country in the Marines for two years and after an honorable discharge, returned home to Wisconsin. Greg worked as a welder for the majority of his working career. On June 12, 1997, Greg was united in marriage to Kathyrn Peardon in Jamaica. Greg was a great husband to Kathy and loved and appreciated her very much. Greg was a man of many talents. He was gifted artistically and was skilled with his hands. He expressed his art in a number of different mediums. Painting and sketching were two of his favorite art forms and he has created many beautiful pieces over the years, some of which are on display at the Veteran's Hospital in Tomah, the Veteran's Clinic in Wisconsin Rapids, and the Milwaukee Public Museum. Over the years, he also received many rewards. He was also a skilled craftsman and could fix or repair just about anything. Greg had a warm and appreciative personality. Even during his final years with health struggles, he remained positive and thankful for the quality time spent with his loving family. Greg was a good man and he will be greatly missed by his loved ones.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Kathyrn Schmidt of Elkhorn, WI; his children, Luke DeSmith and Marsha DeSmith; his step-sons, Christian (Jen) Bakalars, Ben (Carrie) Bakalars, Gerald (Kory) Garlock, Jr. of Elkhorn, WI, John (Erin) Garlock of Bristol, WI; his brothers, Anthony DeSmith and Matthew (Angie) DeSmith. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother George, and his sisters, Barbara, Mary, and Sue.
A Funeral Service to honor Greg’s life will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Gibson Family Funeral Home in Palmyra, WI (320 W. Main St. Palmyra, WI 53156). The Rev. Duane Goetsch will officiate the service. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Greg will be laid to rest in Melendy’s Prairie Cemetery with full military honors immediately following the service.
