Neal J. Long, 92, of Gainesville, GA and previously of Palmyra, WI passed away on December 5, 2021.
Neal was born on January 23, 1929 in Renick, WV the son of Frank and Grace (Scott) Long. He grew up in Clover Lick, West Virginia and after his schooling he faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Neal served on a Naval Destroyer and was very proud of his military service. Neal was united in marriage to Bernadine Macur. They were blessed with two children, Patti and John. Neal worked as an electrician for the majority of his working career. He spent a good portion of his career working in Deerfield, IL at the Kitchens of Sara Lee. After his retirement, he and Bernadine moved to Palmyra. He was a Green Bay Packers fan since their beginnings. He was Irish through and through, strong and hard working. Neal was active in the Palmyra American Legion Thomas Holcomb Post 304 and also the 40 et 8. He enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of his fellow veterans. He also enjoyed volunteering at his local church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he also served as an usher for several years. Neal was very social and enjoyed chatting and spending time with his friends and family. Neal also had a love for the outdoors, greatly enjoying hunting and fishing. He could also be found working hard in his garden, which seemed to grow bigger each year. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Neal is survived by his children, Patti Pohlman (late husband Mike Pohlman) of Gainesville, GA and John (Marianne) Long of Morton Grove, IL; his six grandchildren; and his six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one sister Betty Gragg, Baltimore MD, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and his loving wife, Bernadine in 2013.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, May 7th, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Palmyra, WI. Fr. Mariadas Bekala will officiate the mass. Visitation will take place from 9:15AM until the time of mass at the church. Neal will be laid to rest next to his wife immediately following the service in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery.
