William “Bill” R. Schmitt, 85, of Mukwonago, Wisconsin passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 20, 2026 at his loving residence of Elaine’s Hope Memory Care in Wauwatosa.
Bill was born on February 28, 1941 and raised in Shorewood by his father Francis and mother Martha (Hammes). Bill attended St. Robert Catholic Elementary School followed by Marquette University High School. It is at these schools where he formed some of his lifelong friendships, experienced fun adventures (especially at the “Pig ‘n Whistle”), and curated his great love of cars. Bill continued his schooling at St. Louis University, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree. During his time there, he met and united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Desmond-Bradley; the Lord blessed them with two loving daughters, Kristine and Erika. Bill was a wonderful father and made many precious memories with his girls, including Brewers games, annual trips to Door County, swimming at Bradford Beach, outings for ice cream, and scenic summer bike rides. Bill never hesitated to help his daughters when needed, whether it be getting woken up in the middle of the night with tummy aches or guiding them responsibly into adulthood. Bill’s devotion and adoration of Kristine and Erika were evident to all, and for that they are forever grateful.
Bill spent most of his career working as a Human Resource Analyst for Milwaukee County, taking great pride in his work and in providing for his family. He remained dedicated to his colleagues and work until he retired in 1995. Bill loved to have fun with his friends, and throughout the decades, would enjoy watching movies, going to car shows, and joining their families together for weekend adventures. He was also a man of deep faith, a devoted Catholic who served his parishes in various ways throughout his life. Bill was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, and enjoyed the bond of that brotherhood as well. He was a caring man and will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those he leaves behind.
Bill is survived by his two children, Kristine (Nathan) Bayer of Shorewood, and Erika Ellerie of Brookfield; his granddaughter, Harper Bayer; and the mother of his children, Patricia Desmond-Bradley. Bill is further survived by his many nieces and nephews who viewed him as their “cool Uncle Bill”, as well as his dear friends who always provided unwavering companionship.
Bill is preceded in death by: his parents, stepmother Helen, and his siblings, Francis, James, Mary, and Ruth.
Bill will be laid to rest during a private graveside burial at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery of Eagle, Wisconsin.
In lieu of flowers or memorial trees, memorials in Bill's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association to help the fight against Alzheimer's.
